Speech Language Pathology
Speech-language services in schools primarily focus on supporting students’ ability to communicate effectively. This includes both receptive language (understanding what is heard or read) and expressive language (sharing thoughts, needs, and ideas), which are essential for learning, social interaction, and participation in the classroom environment.
Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs) are specialists in all areas of communication. They are responsible for assessing and identifying students’ communication strengths and needs, and for supporting their development through individualized goals and interventions. As integral members of the educational team, SLTs collaborate with teachers, families, administrators, and child study team members to design and implement educational programs for students with communication disorders. They also serve as valuable resources in the areas of speech and language development and disorders.
The speech and language evaluation process includes:

Formal and informal assessment of speech and language skills

Observations in natural settings (e.g., classroom or recess)

Collaboration with teachers and staff

Communication with parents or guardians
This comprehensive process ensures that the student’s communication needs are accurately identified and supported.
Important Note for Preschool-Aged Children
Children who are not yet school-aged (prior to kindergarten entry) are generally not referred for speech-language services through the school district for articulation concerns alone, as many sound errors are still considered developmentally appropriate. Speech and language evaluations are typically considered by the Child Study Team once a child is of school age, especially when communication concerns may impact learning.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development and believe an evaluation may be needed, please complete the Referral Form (external) or contact the Child Study Team Department to request a meeting.
All referrals must include:

For your ease, we have attached the Referral Form or you can email the Child Study Team Department requesting a meeting to discuss a potential evaluation. This referral MUST include original signature and why you are referring your child.
