New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA)

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) is the statewide test taken by students in
grades 3 through 8. It measures performance against the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in
English Language Arts and Mathematics, with Science assessed in grades 5 and 8.

What Families Should Know

NJSLA results are one measure among several. They are reported to families individually, and the
school uses aggregate results to review curriculum and instruction. The results do not by themselves
determine placement or promotion.

Testing Window and Preparation

The testing window is set by the New Jersey Department of Education and communicated to families
each spring. Students do not need to prepare beyond their normal classwork, though the state
publishes sample items showing the format of the questions.
